Veterans returning home
Service deserves respect. Housing decisions deserve clarity.
Preferred Housing Solutions is Marine-veteran-led. This page is for veterans returning to Wake County — including older veterans — and the professionals helping them find somewhere to live.
Why this page exists
Veterans know how to wait. They should not have to wait for an answer.
Older veterans entering civilian housing after a period of instability often meet a system that assumes a work history, a family network, or both.
We provide independent shared housing — a private room in a home, on written terms, for veterans who can live independently. Our founder served in the United States Marine Corps, and that standard is simple: tell people the truth about a housing option before they commit to it.
What we cannot do is decide your VA eligibility, file a claim for you, or guarantee assistance. Those sit with the Department of Veterans Affairs and its accredited representatives.
Questions worth asking VA and SSVF staff
If you are working with VA staff, a Veterans Service Officer or an SSVF provider, these questions get you a useful answer faster. We are not in a position to answer them for you — but we can tell you what to ask.
- 01
Which VA housing programmes could apply to my circumstances, and what is the application sequence?
- 02
Is there a pending claim, and what is its current status and expected timeline?
- 03
If a payment is pending, what interim options exist while it is decided?
- 04
Does any programme I qualify for assist with rent, and what evidence does it require from a landlord?
- 05
Would a shared-housing arrangement be acceptable under that programme's rules?
- 06
Who can act as an accredited representative or VSO on my behalf, at no cost to me?
