What independent housing means here
Independent, nonmedical housing for adults who can live independently, with outside supports arranged independently where appropriate.
Residents hold their own housing arrangement. Support services are arranged and funded separately from the housing itself.
What is included
A room in a shared residential property, in the format described for that specific property.
The included costs for that property — commonly utilities and furnishings, confirmed per property.
The access conditions for that property, provided in writing before a decision.
What is not included
Personal care or assistance with activities of daily living.
Clinical treatment, therapy or behavioural health services.
Medication management or administration.
Supervision, monitoring or custody.
Emergency shelter or crisis accommodation.
Family, child or supervised-care placements.
Accommodation requests
Accommodation requests receive individualized review. We do not apply blanket exclusions based on disability or on the use of assistive devices.
Where a request cannot be met, we say so directly and describe what would need to be true for it to be possible.
Distinct housing pathways
Independent shared housing, recovery housing, returning-citizen housing and healthcare workforce housing are separate pathways, each with its own scope and operating requirements. Not every model is currently in development in every market.
Employee-oriented Healthcare Workforce Housing is kept separate from housing inquiries involving adults leaving hospitals.
Choice, acceptance and payment
Resident choice, housing acceptance and payment authorization are three distinct steps. A referral does not authorize payment and does not by itself confirm a placement.
About this document
This is an original Preferred Housing Solutions document describing our own approach and process. It is not an executed contract, and it is not an approved agency, government or funder document. Nothing in it reserves housing, confirms a placement or authorizes payment.
